March 2 2007 Update

Click to see photos of the celebration! As part of our School Improvement Plan, the School Community Home Partnership committee of W.T. Sampson School, challenged the community of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to become “Millionaires” by reading at least a million minutes. The project began with a kickoff which was announced on “Open Line”( the base wide call in radio program). The Commander, Capt. Mark Leary, was on board from the very beginning! The community wide tally began October 14th and was to end at the end of January. It was extended to coincide with the birthday of Dr. Seuss and the Read Across America program.

The community rose to the challenge by reading over 1,065,000 minutes! Forms were turned in from not only school children and their families, but from the various commands on base as well, including JTF, the Fire Station and even the Navy Exchange! The local Morale Welfare and Recreation agency, led by the base librarian, joined the efforts by collecting forms at the base library and planning a celebration to announce reaching our goal! And what a celebration it was!

A Backyard Birthday Bash was held to commemorate Dr. Seuss’ birthday, and reaching the million minute mark. The high school drama department entertained everyone with skits and puppet shows. Children were read to by volunteer readers from the community. Art students painted faces of the happy attendees. We are indeed a community of millionaires, rich with readers!

October 2006 Update

clipart of great books to read

Million Minute Publicity Flyer

Tally forms for your weekly reading

Download Colorful Bookmarkers

Million Minute Reading Madness - Starts Oct 16!

Teens Recommend Great Reading!

Reading Tip #1: While reading books to young children, point word by word so the child learns that reading goes left to right and that the words spoken are the words on the page.
Reading Tip #2:
When reading to a young child, pause often to ask about the story's pictures and to have conversations with the child about what is happening in the story.
